RHYTHM AND MOVEMENT COMPOSITIONS
Students created a composition in Adobe Illustrator using only lines, shapes, and a single letter to display their understanding of the design principles of movement and rhythm. They drew a random letter out of a hat and had to explore the intimate shapes and curves that their individual letter posessed.
Movement and rhythm can be created in a design by repeating elements such as lines and shapes. It's important for a graphic designer to understand the purpose of rhythm because it can help a designer create a feeling of unity in their work. Movement is another integral concept in graphic design because a designer can use organize elements to strategically move the viewer's eye throughout the piece.
POSITIVE/NEGATIVE SPACE COMPOSITIONS
Students created a mini-composition using only lines, shapes, and a single letter to display their understanding of the design principles of positive and negative space. Students also created an original illustration to further showcase their skills.
Positive and negative space play an important role in determining the overall composition in a work of art. By understanding positive and negative space and applying your knowledge, you can become more successful in designing your compositions. Negative space is, quite simply, the space that surrounds an object in a image. Just as important as the object itself, negative space helps to define the boundaries of positive space and brings balance to a composition.
