Social Justice Posters
High School Students
Students were encouraged to use their creative abilities as a way to address pressing social issues and change the way others perceive the world. Students learned about several Contemporary artists:
- Ai Wei Wei: A Chinese artist who creates controversial artworks that often ignite outrage and encourage political action.
- Banksy: A British graffiti artist and political activist who creates satirical street art in a distinctive stenciling technique.
- Shepard Fairey: An american street artist, graphic design, and illustrator. He became widely known during the 2008 U.S. presidential election for his Barack Obama "Hope" poster.
- Patrick Martinez: A Los Angeles Mixed Media artist who appropriates idyllic Americana scenes and reimagines them with images of police brutality.
The Prompt: Create a Poster to enact social change.
Students researched a social justice topic that they were interested and passionate about for the basis of their artwork and used a variety of media ranging from watercolor, colored pencils, graphite pencils, pen and ink, and collage.
