Zombie Contour Drawings
High School Students
What is a contour? A contour is a line that defines a form or an edge - an outline. Artists practice contour drawing as a way to carefully study what they are seeing. This is a great exercise for students to let go of their perfectionism because there is no such thing as a perfect contour drawing. This project was done during October right around Halloween and student’s learned about the tragic, forgotten history of Zombies based on an article written by The Atlantic.
Students created their own zombie using the contour line drawing technique. We then studied the local artist Laura Klien and viewed the fantastical creatures she creates using watercolor paints. Students experimented with different water color techniques and added color and life to their zombie drawings.
